LSC Pick-up Roam

Post by Luca Goh »

A couple of us late-night North Americans have been flying together pretty consistently over the last week or two out at LSC, and tonight we had an eventful enough roam that it seemed worth writing about.

A bunch of us were spread out around UPH so form-up was slow and casual. During the process we had spotted a Daredevil bouncing through systems and sitting in novices. In UPH we were able to converge on him outside the gate for our first kill of the evening. Once more than one of us got on grid he put up surprisingly little fight.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64501775/ +76.63mil

From here we traveled into Verge Vendor and up into the Melmaniel - Costolle - Muetralle pipe. I’d been encountering a trio of faction warfare pilots there over the last few days who seemed up to fight and thought it worth a look. All was quiet until Muetralle but there we saw a Corax and a Rupture sitting in a Large. I warped in first and called the Rupture primary. The Corax got spooked off pretty quickly leaving his poor buddy to go it alone. The Rupture was applying decent damage to my Comet with his webs applied but was splitting his DPS to my drones as well and failed to bring me down before we secured the kill.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64501946/ +40.03mil

We roamed into Essence from there and had a few eventful encounters with a Garmur that was soon joined by a buddy. This culminated with a bunch of us warping to a novice at different distances in the hopes of catching them. At one point I was pointed by one but managed to overheat my AB out of their range; in general they were not too good at applying tackle and piloting and managed to let us slip away more often than they should have (I should have been dead to rights there). Finally however they got on the same page and both pointed Rider unfortunately and took him down.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64502254/ -34.87mil

Shortly thereafter Jyo found a Vexor at a safe and combat probed him down like a champ. When we arrived on grid it was already in bad shape, apparently from gate guns. Jyo, Kraez, and I brought him down easily, with Kraez netting his first ever kill. A good first one!

Shortly thereafter we spotted a Maulus bouncing around system. We chased it a bit and managed to catch it outside a novice. With a Legion combat probing and presumably other buddies there as well we worked to bring it down quickly and get the heck out of there.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64502348/ +8.83mil

At this point an hour and a half into flying we started to head back to UPH looking for content on the way. Jyo found it in the form of a flashy Svipul in Ouelletta I believe. After a bit of cat and mouse including some back and forth at the gates I landed on the Loes gate and found him sitting 100 off. Jyo wisely advised us to burn away so that we could warp when he land at 100 off the gate. Jyo worked it perfectly landing near the Svipul and went in for hard tackle so he could apply his web. Unfortunately it took us a few precious seconds to pull enough range to warp; in retrospect I could have been much clearer in how far I was from being at warp range, but we were all eager to lock the Svipul down after an extended time chasing it. We managed to get on the Svipul shortly before Jyo went down; at least his loss was not in vain!

This encounter made for a great end to a successful evening despite the bummer of a loss.

Kills: +250.37mil
Losses: -172.56mil
Efficiency: 59.2%

What stuck out to me about this roam was the variety of ways in which we found fights: YOLO warping to plexes, combat scanning things down, your basic D-scan-and-warp into a plex, and some gate games that involved following a highly mobile target throughout a system and coordinating warp-ins. In this way this roam personally felt like a small culmination of all the skills I’ve been learning in the last few months as I spend more and more time PvPing. The loose, informal structure of this roam with everyone sharing roles made for a free-wheeling, spider-type fleet that enabled us to find content as quickly as we could. As an added bonus we had pilots with a range of PvP experience with us, and got someone their first and second kills (a Vexor and a Svipul; not bad, Kraez!). In general this outing seemed to me to encapsulate what being in LSC is all about: learning from each other in the process of finding fights and having a good time in a casual setting. And, more and more, seeing that our time in Uni teaches us a lot: I'm increasingly running into pilots with equal or better fittings that I can tell just haven't been taught how to pilot their ships or coordinate their tactics. It's a good feeling to slowly but surely see my experiences and "education" giving me the upper hand. Which presumably is why we all joined Eve Uni.

Thanks for the fun, fellas! Looking forward to flying with you again. If anyone else is ever out at LSC we'd love to have you join us. The more the merrier, and the bigger the kills.

At first I thought things could have been different if I loaded Mjolnir (EM damage) when engaging that Svipul, but turns out his lowest shield resist was Kinetic or Thermal at 65% in defense mode with all V skills- I had Nova loaded, with either of those other ammo I might have been able to take him down first...

Rider, Jyo, and I had another eventful roam last night.

All was mostly quiet coming from LSC up into Black Rise. Itching for a fight, we engaged a Gnosis at a Large without much recon. It turned out the pilot was running a RLML fit with a neut to handle pesky brawlers. As I was in a pesky brawling Enyo, he made short work of me. Luckily we had all landed at different distances so the other two were able to disengage easily.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64639540/ -37.39m

A reminder: recon helps! I always find it to be a balance between acting quickly when a situation presents itself and being cautious to make sure I know as much as I can about a potential target. In this particular engagement we were way on the side of acting fast and it cost me my ship. I didn't really mind the loss though: part of PvP for me right now is experimenting with what I/we can and can't take on. Here we definitely bit off more than we could chew, but I learned a bit in the process. Right now I'm happy to err on the side of giving a fight a shot even if the outcome is less than ideal.

As I flew my pod to Kinakka to reship Jyo and Rider spotted a Stratios in Reitsato. It continued to be on D suggesting it was at a combat site. Rider left system hurriedly and Jyo started scanning down sigs with innocuous core probes. A probable location was found. Meanwhile I kept thinking there was no way I would make it back in time, especially given that I was traveling 8j in a pod, but sure enough I was able to reship (into a rail Comet) and make it back to Okkamon with the Stratios continuing to remain on D. Jyo warped to the site and found the pilot in the first room (!). He took heavy damage IIRC but we were able to bring the Stratios down without a loss. Not a blingy fit or fearsome pilot by any means but nonetheless it felt great to secure a swanky kill between just the three of us that required some extra leg work. If a kill is a kill, then a Stratios kill is most definitely a Stratios kill!

Double props to Jyo who continues to put his Jackdaw's scanning abilities to excellent and skillful use.

The pilot let loose his existential woe in local.

Feeling good we came across a Myrmidon shortly thereafter. We had spotted it earlier but it was engaging something else and we didn't feel comfortable third-partying. Now by its lonesome, we took a shot, despite my inner misgivings after the inopportune Gnosis engagement. This time around it was Rider who who was focused on. He was holding up well until his cap dwindled and his Enyo went down shortly thereafter.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64639706/ -49.63m

I believe I had to bounce at one point but made it back on grid just in time to see Jyo finish off the Myrmidon. Loss aside, at least this time we were able to balance the spreadsheet!

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64639708/ +122.05m

Some more skirting around brought us nothing engage-able or willing to engage so we started to head home.

In Nen Jyo spotted an Enyo at a small so Rider and I decided to try it. He had reshipped into a Punisher (thanks to Uni stock contracts!) so that plus my rail Comet seemed a challenging if plausible match for the Enyo. However we found it sitting outside the plex which made my heart sing a little as I knew Jyo could offer support. The Enyo went down smoothly.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64639836/ +47.78m

He was however joined by a Succubus friend. Ruh roh. We maintained disciplined focus on the Enyo in order to bring him down as the Succubus went after Jyo. Post Enyo kill, there was a bit of a scramble to determine whether to maintain or break off the engagement. A Succubus is a tough fight for our troupe of Jackdaw/AB Comet/AB Punisher given its speed and the fact that we only had two webs between the three of us. Jyo was holding decent range but it was closing, and the pair were pulling further away from Rider and I. We stuck with the fight however with me switching to Spike and overheating my AB. Jyo/Succubus had pulled about 25-30 km from me when Jyo defensive-webbed the Succubus. From here I managed to close range and the Succubus made an unfortunate piloting error of swinging back into me in its effort to pull range on Jyo. I webbed it down too and bear-hugged it with a 500m orbit. With all the focus on closing range and landing tackle I lost focus on the heat on my guns and burnt them out. Double ruh roh! However the Succubus was in rough shape at this point so I continued to web and let my drones chip away in addition to Jyo's damage. He fell shortly thereafter.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64639855/ +127.96m

GFs abounded in local. It was a very fun engagement, covering a lot of ground outside the plex and involving coordinated movement between the three of us. I feel like our communication and quick decision-making helped us get the edge. I think it says something that we were able to take such a tough fight against solid pilots and come out without any losses.

On the way home I blapped a faction-corp newb in a plex because I'm a jerk I guess. I feel like I'm moving towards the days when this kind of kill is not worth the sec loss (though I didn't realize he would be fit anywhere near this poorly), but am not there quite yet.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/64640071/ +1.63m

Total isk killed: +412.32m
Total isk lost: -87.02m
Isk efficiency: 82.57%

Overall this was another great roam with several varied kinds of engagements. We also tangled with a Slicer at one point, tried to pin down a Vexor, etc etc, so there were a fair few other fight fights that didn't result in killmails. The three of us were working together well and it showed in the form of some nice kills.

Yesterday I was excited to see some new faces in LSC chat that turned out to be two NSCers visiting their scruffy pirate neighbors, Breenie Shi and Omnicious Shardani. They were kind enough to let me join them for a roam and I took them on a bit of a grand tour of the greater LSC area, traveling UPH -> NEN -> TAM -> ABU -> JOV -> UPH. I like this path for a large roam because it covers a lot of area and avoids some of what I have found to be the blobbier spots such as the "northwest" corner of Black Rise. I've found some great fights in some of the smaller pipes through or adjacent to this course at one point or another in which I felt more comfortable taking on a challenging fight since I felt fairly confident I wouldn't get tackled by a gang.

It was a pretty quiet night, in which some of us got blobbed at a few points and we had trouble finding fights.

https://zkillboard.com/kill/65019236/ -30.37mil
https://zkillboard.com/kill/65017969/ -12.82mil

There was thankfully a decent payoff, however. When I jumped into Hevrice I found a Gnosis ratting in one belt and a Stratios with a Procurer in another. Both belts were less than 1 AU from my in gate, allowing me to get a quick drop on the pilots in system. I considered going for the Stratios given it was the blingiest ship but had a good guess as to who the pilot was and wasn't confident our small T1 frigate gang could take them on successfully. The Gnosis pilot on the other hand seemed inexperienced (newb name on ship, red killboard including several Gnosis losses [several more to have appeared since yesterday!]), so I chose them as our target.

When I landed on the belt they were sitting 11k or so from the warp-in, so getting tackle was easy. By the time Breenie and Omni got on grid I was taking decent damage and aligning out, but ended up being able to tank the damage through a combination of repping and speed tanking. Staying on grid allowed me to continue to be the focus of fire and meatshield my squishier wing mates. In the meantime Breenie was able to pressure the Gnosis with neuts and impede his active tank. It was a fun fight that lasted longer than the frigate engagements I'm used to and required some niftier-than-usual piloting. We managed to bring the Gnosis down without losing anyone; hooray us!

Much of my impetus for posting this roam specifically is to say how much I enjoyed the fact that a few NSCers paid us a visit in the hopes of PvPing in low. It made me reflect on how isolated we can often be in Uni in our individual campuses and activities. Flying with these guys definitely encouraged me to make a point to visit NSC with the intent of PvP roaming. I also want to encourage anyone who may be interested in PvP to visit LSC! If anyone catches me on during my usual late US TZ I would love to fly with you, newbie and PvP rock star alike.

I'm pretty wiped this evening so excuse my lack of elegance. TL;DR: come visit LSC and blow things up with us because we'd like that and we'll probably come visit you and blow things up with you too.

Had another busy night at the LSC with some new faces and in some new ships that ended pretty well for us.

The evening started with a chat with Romulus Finn in LSC chat and we soon connected, him in a blaster Moa and myself in a blaster Hecate (all the DPS is ours!). Rom is a self-avowed high sec guy so it was great to see him walking on the wild side a little bit and I was glad we got some fun content for him.

We started by taking the pipe up towards Jovainnon and into Essence, getting a few easy kills along the way. The kills themselves were nothing flashy but I got two of them via combat probes which I’m trying to improve at using so it was nice to see some positive results. One of these was an Imicus with a bit in the cargo hold which improved our isk tally.

Imicus: https://zkillboard.com/kill/65286667/ +15.08m

From here we took the loop back into Murethand meeting up with Jyo Cbip in a brawly Jackdaw and Reichat Oughto in a Thrasher. We made our way up into the “north” of Placid and then hung west at ALD. All was quiet until Alparena where we found five Algoses and a Griffin in a medium. The Griffin was less than ideal but we made a go of it anyway. Jyo was unfortunately primaried and jammed out, eventually losing his ship, but the rest of us maintained disciplined focus with our damage and cut a mean swath through the Algoses. Reichat did a good job getting off grid deep in structure, staying in one piece.

Jyo’s Jackdaw: https://zkillboard.com/kill/65287566/ -78.84m

Sorry, Jyo.

Not a lot of nuance to this engagement but honestly, downing Algoses left and right was personally quite fun and felt like what the blaster max DPS Hecate was born to do.

Romulus and Reichat called it a night from here (thanks for coming out guys!) and Jyo was reshipping so I took it upon myself to pick a fight with a Dragoon and an Algos in ALD. As I am new to the Hecate I want to see what it can do even if it means picking less than ideal fights. I piloted very poorly in this, not maintaining range control on the Dragoon and switching to null far too late. I also should have perhaps switched to defensive mode rather than going for max DPS in the hopes of clearing the Dragoon as quickly as possible. And I managed my cap poorly. The end result was that I got neuted out and died a horrible death to less-than-impressive pilots. I very much got what I deserved here and hopefully learned from it.

So long, Hecate: https://zkillboard.com/kill/65287909/ -71.99m

With both of us feeling humbled, Jyo and I switched to Asteros. A few of us have been discussing flying cloaky gangs and this felt like a good time to search for targets of opportunity and hopefully boost morale. We went to the low sec pocket past Slays which was quiet until Avaux. Jyo spent a few minutes setting up position on a Procurer mining an ice belt and I was just landing on his perch cloaked when it warped off and docked up. Bummed at a missed opportunity, we sought out the Enyo that was ratting in system. We bounced around a few prospective belts until Jyo found his location. We closed in with Jyo slightly ahead and decloaking before I did. The Enyo stayed on to engage and I shed my cloak as soon as Jyo landed tackle. The Enyo was blaster fit hitting quite hard but Jyo managed his dual reps well and I applied double webs which both helped our application and kept us at a safer range. It was a fun, hair-raising fight but we managed to get the kill and were rewarded with a blingy killmail and a fairly generous drop. Between the loot and ~17m/each bounty we covered both our T3D losses that evening and had fun to boot.

Enyo: https://zkillboard.com/kill/65288549/ +342.07m

Kudos to the Enyo pilot for handling the loss in a classy fashion.

Image

I did a bit of digging around his killboard and found that it had been over two and a half years since he last lost an Enyo to a PC (there was one to Concord in May 2016). Funnily enough it came to a Unista too. So keep your eyes peeled for a juicy Enyo target in early 2020, people.

Quite a fun night that ended on a high note and a great way to christen our cloaky gang. Here’s hoping for many more nights like it.
