Decided to put as much detail as I could recall just for the future noting of any subsequent AARs. I think these are excellent learning tools.

I was JUST about to chow down on some juicy dinner when I heard over comms that we had a war target enter Jufvitte. I figured there was a sufficient amount of active Unistas in fleet and comms so, I decided to proceed with my plan to devour my food when the call for FCing duties interrupted.

Two war targets decided to come out in a Stabber and a Vagabond. One even asked for someone to 1v1 them in local. Intel reported they may have been salty from the earlier engagements in HSC. No one wanted to 1v1 so, QRF blob... why not. (see linked local chat below, slightly editted for PGness)

I asked for Caracals since I figured we'd be able to ship into them fairly quickly, as QRFs have become a daily occurrence for the HSC campus. While getting the QRF folks ready, a call was made over comms of someone being aggressed. I undocked the QRF fleet to engage and of course once the war targets saw us coming on D-Scan, they quickly scattered to tacticals. Unista didn't get blown up so, small win there I suppose. The Vagabond was a bit too quick for the initial QRF so I decided to try for the Stabber which jumped into JUF and we followed. A small skirmish with one tackle frigate down, I again regrouped the seperated fleet and warped us to a tactical. Unfortunately this was slightly complicated as I was only a squad commander in fleet and was not able to warp everyone at once. Again, to prevent the fleet getting picked off I warped us away to a safe and back to AMY to dock up and sort things out a bit. Folks reshipped as needed and we undocked again. Intel reported the Stabber was above the JUF gate on a tactical and the Vagabond was at 30km on the gate. I intended to annoy the war targets into warping out of AMY so I asked 5 members (Rogue Ozran - Orthrus, Asuka Rossi - EWAR, Christoph Patrouette - Jaguar, Larkvi - Fast Tackle, KPYTOE KOPOBO - Fast Tackle) to jump into JUF and stand by on gate camp. The rest of the QRF warped to engage the war targets in AMY. Christoph was able to find a beautiful tactical the Stabber was on and provided initial tackle/scram on the Stabber. He died quickly. The jaguar left to repair, came back and again provided initial tackle/scram on the Vagabond. He died quickly as well. GFs in local from the Vagabond pilot (the Stabber pilot was apprently too salty to provide the same) and that was that. Mission accomplished.

Overall evaluation:

✔ (Positive stuff)
Fast Form Up. We had Caracal Doctrine undocked within 60 seconds of the initial call.
Comms were clear and the reporting of war target movements is very good. (Comes with consistent war I suppose, lol.)
No lack of volunteers for various fleet roles and snowflake ships for getting the job done. I mostly turned down things simply because of our numbers already in doctrine.

✘ (Negative stuff)
I believe we need more individuals willing to step up and FC sometimes. I've seen multiple QRFs form up and be ready to undock but won't until someone decides to FC the fleet. Don't be afraid to step up and try! Even if the fleet ultimately gets whelped, this is a teaching organization. We can always learn from mistakes and improve!
We could be better with bouncing to avoid incoming DPS if Logi is not available to rep you.
(Not For the University - Some of our war targets just need better etiquette. Seems strange to me that they are willing and able to war dec the Uni and then complain to no end they aren't getting the fights that they want to get....)

Re: [AAR] another HSC QRF against Hog Hitmen

Post by Ievos »

I will second the encouragement for others to step up and take FC. Not to diminish the impact or benefit that comes from experienced FC's, but it would benefit HSC for more people to take the plunge.

Have you 3IC'd? Scouted? Been on enough fleets to know how they are run and how the ships act? Step up! Keep it simple, keep inexpensive, and people will support you for trying!!!

It is better to act, but act poorly than to never act at all.

Good summary of the activity for sure. On the "need more volunteers to step up and FC" part I don't disagree; however, there is decidedly a preference in the HSC community for specific people to FC. This is not the FC-types I am referring to making these comments. I have heard some of our most active and respected HSC folks state very openly when activity flares up that they want to wait for FC so and so to show up. They immediately recommend everyone dock up while they hit SLack to see if they can rope in one of their preferred FCs. This immediately puts a damper on anyone else stepping up for an attempt and creates lack of trust among those present who may not all know each other. It is a contagious and very negative thing when it happens for anyone who might have otherwise been willing.

I have gone ahead for tackles solo and simply hoped others may join in a time or two when that happened and it worked but remained a rabble versus an organized fleet. In both instances I am thinking of the WT wasn't really wanting to fight anyway and either played station games or ran away so it is hard to say if it would have evolved into a proper fleet over time but because of the initial comments made there wasn't a good way to proactively kick it off.

I get that people want to win and relying on those they have done that with is comfortable but as a PvPer I've gotten over the fear of dying. It is clear those in HSC as a general rule have not and it still concerns them. I'm not trying to throw dispersion their way because I understand their attitude having been there myself. I would just ask that if you happen to be fleet boss and running PvE when WTs show up and you are not willing to FC the QRF yourself you are not in a position to dictate the process for responding. Get everyone to dock up safely and then be willing to hand off FB to ANYONE willing to give it a try. If there has to be a "qualification" process than anyone in the FCC program should be qualified and at least given a chance to step up.

Some instruction on what to actually do as a part of the QRF response would be good too. The Wiki page is a bit dated and more focused on the fine print of propriety than actually responding. The "Forum" page linked on it to learn more doesn't exist either. There should be clear instructions on HOW to respond that includes putting yourself into the proper wing of the QRF fleet based on your fit and willingness to participate (i.e. Logi, Scout, DPS, EWAR). If folks did this voluntarily any FC could step in and quickly evaluate the resources on hand to respond with. This would be better for those who lack confidence in new FCs and help the new FCs. The general practice to date has been everyone jumps into the QRF DPS wing and the FC takes a while to get organized as a result...assuming one of the chosen 3 are there, otherwise you can expect a lengthy dock up.
