[AAR] Small Gang Tournament

In Brief

Our team's motto was: "Slow and steady". We went out a sweeping 14 times. 11 of our fleets lasted for 15 up to 60 minutes. Our ship selection was mostly compromised of Atrons, Comets, and Algos (Gallente Pride!). On average we had 3.36 people on fleet. We were a volume team. Our average kills were only 30.5m ISK worth. The large number of engagements gave us plenty of learning opportunities (see "Best Piloting Improvement" below).

Key Learnings

Leading most of the fleets, my top three key learnings from our roams were:

(1) PPP - Positioning, Piloting, Patience:
Spoiler
Fights are not only done by diving into engagements and exchanging volleys. Fights can consist of warping in at various ranges and "dancing" with the opponents. e.g. Patient maneuvers can lure careless hostiles out providing the opportunity to kill them away from their fleet. Patiently spreading enemies out on grid can yield an initial advantages for the actual gang engagement. Snatching selected kills by third-partying ongoing large-scale fights is done in the same way. Drones can soften opponents shields, before going in for the tackle. Generally, piloting your ship pre-fight is not only useful, but exhilarating and a way to extend your battle time (and skills)!

Be patient. Sometimes, slowing down yields better results. There's much more to fights than we're used to and when we learn about our capabilities and succeed in playing our cards right, it's a massive reward (not only to oneself, but the entire team). The only thing you need to master is to know you and your enemy (lol - sorry, quick Sun Tzu reference right there, but it's so true in EVE!).
(2) Organization, Tools:
Spoiler
Being organized is more important than being just right there. Many times we just lost, because locals had a variety of toys available, while we were flying mostly kitchen sink without tailoring our ships to the tournament game play. Initially, we have lost many ships, because of not having invested in preparation and logistics. When we finally did bring in ships, we were much more successful.

Learn from your battle experiences and make yourself a variety of ships available to play with and adjust to the ever changing circumstances.
(3) Bonding:
Spoiler
In EVE, as well in real life, it's the people who keep us going. If we didn't had such a good chemistry and fun in our team, we would probably have burned out rather soon and lose out on the many nice fleets we had together. It wasn't always easy, but we did encourage each other. Also a good bond yields more trust and more confidence, which in return leads to better focus, faster reaction, and more kills!

Try to fly with the guys you like, do it regularly, and always participate actively in fleet. We are all in this together.
[AAR] Best Fight Outnumbered

★ Ivy League (Algos and Derptron) vs. No Handlebars (Flycatcher, Heretic, Falcon)
Spoiler
On Thursday morning, I was doing Federation Grand Prix runs. Burning to my location Postouvin, led me through 0.0 space. I spotted two "No Handlebars" Interdictors camping both sides of the 6E-578 and MHC-R3 connection. I called Puzzled in and we set up a game plan:

Situation: They were troll-camping killing a gazillion of incoming Grand Prix shuttles. I was absolutely confident about their mindset and that they will engage us after drawing so much blood on that gate. Our Plan: We will let ourselves be shot by the Heretic in MHC-R3 to give him a timer and will jump through to engage the Flycatcher. Puzzled would hold cloak for as long as needed - with me drawing initial DPS. Our Ships: I got a tanked T1 Algos to draw DPS and Puzzled brought a fast Derptron to chase down and hold the target if need be. The Action: So, we came in. I warped us to a different align point and went to the gate. I let myself be shot by the Heretic. He has a timer now. I jumped through the gate. I get bubbled and I start to engage the Flycatcher. He is buffer fit and shoots back. With the Flycatcher's shields half-way down he starts to burn away from me. I call in Puzzled screaming to give all his heat to the MWD and scram that Flycatcher before he gets out of range. Puzzled catches him. At that exact moment a Falcon decloaks 20km off us. He locks me up. I'm jammed. Starting to take accelerated damage and not able to shoot back, my loyal drones stay on target. I have no idea on the status of the Flycatcher tank. I start to BELIEVE and I scream to Puzzled to stay on target no matter what. As I'm about to go down the Flycatcher suddenly pops! The bubble goes down! I align out and warp off with 7% structure. Hasta la vista, No Handlebars! Leaving the incoming Heretic, the Falcon, and the dead Flycatcher behind, we slowly made our way to PC9 to repair and calm down, having a laugh and giving each other a digital high five on a very successful execution of the game plan.
[AAR] Best Piloting Improvement

★ The Dead Pilot's Society - Brave, Curious, Eager (and Dead lol)
Spoiler
Excluding myself, I would like to nominate my team members for the Best Piloting Improvement award.

While I was celebrating my birthday, Hideo already took charge from day one and started to transform into a small gang FC. He draw first blood and will already take out his first regular fleet on Thursday. Our new players Ethan Solum and Puzzled Monkey became proficient fighters, resourceful scouts, and indistinguishable from our core. Playing with them now, I wouldn't even notice them being new to the game. Zoltan did become invaluable to our team by moving into the world of DST and Freighter logistics. And Tiberius... Well, Tiberius did his thing - camped gates, baited, punished our targets, and got drunk. XD

With such a great team, there was not much left for me to do. Thanks for making this so easy and enjoyable!
Famous Last Words
Spoiler
"We're going to Tama!" ...ahhm, not these last words...
Seriously now: Congratulations to Kora and Decklin - who have joined The Tuskers Co. - for a great and successful tournament (we will miss you) AND all teams for a hopefully fun (and educational) experience. o7

Team Reflection

Because my perspectives are usually boring, I asked my team to reflect on the SGT, here's what we got:

★ Ethan Solum - Positive attitude and fun times!
Spoiler
Thanks for a great event!

I just want to say thanks to Kora and Decklin for organizing this event! It has been a fantastic arena to learn and get loads of experience.
It has been two very intense weeks of small gang PVP, but it has also been two weeks of great fun!

I also want to thank my team, the "The Dead Pilot's Society", for an amazing tournament. It has been a lot of fun. Great to get to know you better!

See you all in space! o7
★ Hideo Date - Rise of the FC within!
Spoiler
I have been interested in small gang PVP for quite some time, but never got any consistency going. Actually, I probably had more PVP activity in the past couple weeks than over the last year. This consistency and the intense, close-knit kind of PVP gave me an amazing amount of learning opportunities. The SGT not only reinvigorated my interest in small gangs, but it also gave me the chance to try my hand at FCing. Amazingly that went far better than I expected, and more important to me, it was far less stressful than I've imagined. Lets see if that picture changes with an regular E-Uni fleet behind me.
★ Puzzled Monkey - Not so puzzled after all!
Spoiler
In the short time I've spent on EVE (6 weeks) flying in the SGT was the most fun I've had. There's a lot of learnings and almost too much to write. Every single roam we did was an educational experience and all the team members were very helpful and patient with me.

I believe the three key areas for me were:

(1) Learn to Minimize Death (Edit by Alexander: lol - valuable trait in The Dead Pilot's Society)
(2) Basics of Scouting
(3) Engagement of Targets

(1) With time I'll be able to work on the mastery of minimizing death, but so far I've learned to align properly, reduce getaway time, use safes when necessary, crash gates, and fly manually (especially keeping my transverse speed up while spiraling in on top targets).

(2) Scouting and finding targets was something I really enjoyed. When I first started I didn't know what I was doing. I kept seeing things on the scanner, but couldn't work out where they were. Because it took me so long, I felt I was stalling the fleet. By the third roam, I was still slower than others, but I learned how to scan systems more efficiently. I started to use safes to bounce while scouting, quickly check complexes with 5 degree scans, and confirm targets by playing with the scan distance.

(3) Engaging targets was fun and educational. I've only ever flown in null sec so it was interesting to learn how to set up gate camps in low sec and negate the sentry guns rotational system by jumping to a safe and return to the fight. On roams, I really enjoyed how Alexander Oromov laid out how we'd engage targets, which target we had to prioritize, why we prioritized them - and after the fight - how he reviewed our engagements regarding what went well and what we could have done better. There's too much to write down in terms of what I've learned and I still have a long way to go, but our gang has given me the confidence to try get out there on solo runs. What I've learned about the process of reflection will help me to reflect on my own fights and hopefully get better at PVP.

Lastly, this isn't about me, but I'd like to make a special mention about Hideo Date. I was on one of the first or second roams he led and did a number of roams afterwards. Confidence-wise he really grew by the third and fourth roam, became more decisive, faster in moving from sector to sector, and better at engagement management. Although there were some unlucky engagements, I noticed the gradual improvement a lot.
★ Tiberius Auduin - When the bait kills the target...
Spoiler
With the good weather and world championship being top killers this time around, I didn't know if I was gonna be able to attend a lot of sorties. So to make myself useful, when the teams were formed, my move was to consolidate communication channels, get people together and start getting to know each other. My first surprise was how eager less PvP experienced players were. #bloodthirst

After pleasantries were exchanged, the Dead Poet Society (edit Alexander: What society? hahaha) went to work. As predicted, I couldn't be present much of the time, but I used the opportunity to clean the hangars. One evening, tanked with beers, I decided to try gate camping. I hope you guys understood my brabble about sensor strength, gate guns and lock time :D All we did was to kill a shuttle, because FC was seeing double :P But Glen, my penal service is over! (give one gatecamp 101 class).

Eventually, we went out for a couple of roams and it was fast paced, content filled and most important, fun! Dual plated punishers make good tackle. Our "beat the downtime" little roam was really exiting, trying to get most of the kills juuuust before the time ran out. It paid off. I hope we can continue flying as a small gang team. I'd like to thank all of the team mates putting energy into this, providing us ships, content and someone to rub off knowledge on! I had a blast! Or as John Keating would say: "Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary!"
★ Yrgrasil ze German 8)
Spoiler
Good job ladies!
★ Zoltan Irvam - Man of action, team spirit, and little words :) !
Spoiler
I did what I do best - space truckin', following FC orders and mashing F1. Still a bit stupefied at the speed of how the pros check sites on d-scan - I guess that's what a few years of practice will do to your game...
The will to continue flying with each other even after the SGT says it all. Thanks guys and see you soon! o7

This was Hideo's third fleet as FC already. He took the gang out even before the tournament started and that helped us to get traction throughout the tournament.

Nothing happened...really, nothing to see here :P

We tried out flying around the north of Placid and I just couldn't resist tackling that Vexor....on a gate...with three t1 frigs :D

The upside: Zoltan got out and looted our wrecks!

Otherwise nothing much happening, Puzzled Monkey got his first try on scouting and did admirably :)

Hideo's Comments
Spoiler
On short notice we went out with three people. I decided to supplement the two t1 frigs with my favorite AF, a Wolf, to give us a bit more wiggle room for engagements. Sounds like a bad idea, I know, but it kinda worked out in the end ;)

On the way through Placid our fast learning scout, Puzzled Monkey, found an Algos at a plex. We jumped into system as he slid the gate and just as he died we came into the plex ourselves. Five seconds faster and we would have gotten the Algos. Afterwards I explained (tried) what goes into tackling a ship that will kill you fast...yes, I should have done that before :D

As there where two big hotspots, most notably Nennamaila, with No Handlebars having some serious fun, we went into Black Rise via Oicx and fruitlessly roamed around the north of BR for a bit. Went back the same way and then again....I just can't resist tackling things on gate I guess :D But this time it was flashy (for some reason the gate guns still exclusively targeted us :P which led to the glorious whelp) and I was in an AF, so finally got the chance to spin up that ADC for the first time, without which we wouldn't have gotten our first kill for the Tourney!

Perfect end to the roam in my mind^^ (Yes this was a really bad trade, I know :D )

Hideo's Comments
Spoiler
So we went out again with two t1 frigs plus AF, in Renarelle we tried engaging a Dragoon which killed Monkey and then bailed, saw a Merlin on another plex and as we slid in I saw that the Dragoon was actually on grid with us again. I engaged, but the others already slid (bad awareness and calls on my part). The Merlin landed as well, so I switched to it. I was very hesitant about calling for backup as I thought they would kill me faster, then the Merlin popped and I thought maybe we could get the Dragoon as well...another bad call as I was already dead when Zoltan warped in, sorry for that useless whelp Zoltan :/

We quickly reshipped and went back up the pipe, activity was picking up all over the place. We ran into another few Uni gangs. One of them engaged a flashy Rupture on a gate, we held off and then bailed when the whole screen filled with cruisers.

A couple jumps more and we found a neat little Legion fleet, we passed on them as well (obviously too small fry for us :P ) but we then found a real gem in Agoze...Saw a Maulus and a Merlin on D in a plex and was very hesitant, took a long time to assess the situation (I didn't want another embarrassing whelp) but ultimately decided that we should be able to bail if things went south. So we went in. Fount the Maulus at range (obviously) but the Merlin at zero on the beacon. Got tackle and hugged his ship...so Maulus damps where completely ineffectual. We started burning him down....and continued....I asked my gang members if they where really hitting him, yes we all where hitting perfectly, what was going on? No reps or nothing, the shield just steadily decreased, all the while I was anxiously checking D-scan, thought any second this obvious bait would be followed up by someone crushing our dreams, but no one came. Funnily enough the Merlin also never hit us, I was really perplexed. But as the ship finally collapsed under our onslaught we got the explanation: pure shield buffer including two medium shield extenders plus rail guns. My most awesome frig kill to date :D

After that I needed to actually go to bed, but was hungry for another kill, which we found a few jumps over in the form of a really cheap kestrel which almost melted before the whole gang got on it.

The good:

- tried moving quicker and more together, which worked out decently
- best t1 frig kill EVER :P

The bad:

- as always on my part: really bad engagement decision at the beginning (I am considering making the "whelp every fleet within the first ten minutes" my signature move :D )

Here we go boys, slow pace, but steady getting a kill here and there.

We were looking good until we were warping to the 60 AU Medium Complex, two worms landed on us, we were killing them until the Cookie Gang warped into us. I really start to dislike their number superiority, but what to do? They are dominating the entire EU time zone in the Gal-Cal warzone and warping in with a gazillion of bloodthirsty Germans. Anyways, kill is kill. Loss is loss. See you tomorrow.

We tricked the Algos guy into a fight by pretending to leave system. We actually pulled this off quite a few times during the tournament. Guys are way to fast to warp back to their complex. :)

We followed the Jackdaw for ages, until our newbro Ethan managed to catch him and we burned him down after Yrgrasil got secondary point. It was a disappointingly cheap fit this time. I've seen better from ratain.

All of our losses at the end in Hikkoken (Comet and the whole fleet) were inflicted by Tau AD and Elite Pilots, the former Alliance leader of Project Mayhem. They know how to play, surprisingly we actually had a chance, BUT!!!

From Lack of Cohesion...

1.) Seeing a 1'000 things in space, we really got into very few engagements. The beginning as always from Stacmon is super slow. there is really never something until you reach either Vlillerier or Heydieles. At the end I opened up our fleet by letting people split up and cover more area, looking for that last fight. Always when you open up you take risks and those guys were so fast, that they already caught us off-guard. Think Zoltan got surprised, cause he was not able to slide. So we were not able to slide and catch their kiters on the beacon. Fleet was massively split up.

...to Messy Grid

2.) Due to us not being cohesive, we were already massively split up when I landed (I managed to slide my slow ass Algos and had to bounce, I was last on grid). Primary was caught and our fast frigates were on him. but their kiters picked them off. We Algoses when we landed were around 100+ km off the target already and with 1.6km/s top speed it would take forever, especially since the fight was moving away even further. So I called me and Ethan in the Algos to engage the closer guy. We almost got the closer guy down, when we suddenly lost web scram on him and he warped off low structure. Not sure why we lost point. I have no perspective on the fight with the frigates far away. Eventually we all died. I was surprised however how long they took to take us down.

...Leading to Mistakes/Confusion

3.) At the end we held a quick AAR, I heard that Zoltan had Web-Scram on one of their guys as well but had to drop to follow the primary. We agreed that I never want anyone in my fleet to ever drop web scram on a kiter and go against any orders. I am not sure if I had misheard a call, but said to mention it on comms, even twice or three times. The fight was messy as hell. IF (big IF) we would have not lost web scram on the first target close beacon, we Algei would have killed him. If Zoltan didn't drop web scram on the second guy, he would have been next, and than our frigates would only have fought that one retribution, and probably finished him off as well. So we would have won the whole fight, instead we welped.

My summary: Last fight is a sad welp. It was messy and we are not used to fly with each other in this combination yet. In a perfect world, we could have won, but fights in EVE seldomly go perfect. So taking the defeat by Elite Pilots CEO and his guys. GF!

...and sorry team!

Tried to get some kills, but went the other way around. We made it back in the race for most losses! Dead Pilot's Society for the win!

I was never worried about our losses. We did suicide our T1 Atrons quite a few times (that's what they are made for after all). However, I was more worried about loosing expensive Comets and Assault frigates, since they added up slowly and steadily (just as our kills did). We could have had the same kill results with cheaper ships though which would have upped our efficiency tremendously!

Slowly but steadily got a kill here and there. Got greedy on a Stork and paid the price against a small-sized-ship-shredding navy kite gang! Ouch!

This is the fleet that had the fight that we nominated for the Best Fight Outnumbered event. Puzzled and I were extremely happy with how the fight unfolded!

[AAR] Best Fight Outnumbered

★ Ivy League (Algos and Derptron) vs. No Handlebars (Flycatcher, Heretic, Falcon)

This was my eighth fleet and it went significantly better than all the others. Why? Because we finally got ourselves some ships and adjusted to small gang combat.

We were tired and partially drunk. We missed one of the potentially most shiny kills we could have had by pilot mistake. This was our low and we decided to dock.

This was my tenth fleet. This was the only fleet, I was not happy with a fight. Some of us warped out by assumption, while we were still fighting.

This is about the fight in Nennamaila, where I was not happy with people warping off:

Had a Garmur on a plex at a 100km. He burned to us and we decided to go for him. We almost got him, when he pulled 8'000m/s. His friends arrived, a Stiletto and two long range confessors at the wrong range. I called immediately to switch to the Stiletto, but one of us already warped out when the guys landed and the third man didn't change the course of action and kept chasing the Garmur. The Stiletto died, spread out and one man short I called scatter, and we lost one Comet. Next time please stay on grid, we should be able to haze the Garmur off and that 8km/s was probably with heat, which he can't hold forever. Please, only follow my lead in battle. I know it's been a though tournament with losses, many of our losses just happened, but also many of our losses (and missed kills) came from mistakes. I am sure we would have been able to go for the Garmur, and still just lose what we lost on that grid. There was nothing that can scram us after the stiletto died and once 100 off their snipers are ineffective.

--> So, main learning point: Fights don't just happen, like engage or not, you actually can stay on grid and use your speed and positioning to spread opponents out and dive in when an opportunity or mistakes happen by the opponent.
