Discrepancy in Punisher armor resistances

Post by Amarra Swiftblade »

Hello fellow Unistas!

The normal armor resistances for Amarr ships are: EM 50%, Thermal 35%, Kinetic 25%, Explosive 20%.

The Punisher has 4% bonus to all armor resistances. The Fitting window shows: EM 56%, Thermal 43%, Kinetic 34%, Explosive 30%.

However, the math shows that the bonus for this outcome is actually 12%:
EM 1-(1-0.5)*(1-0.12) = 56%
Thermal 1-(0.35)*(1-0.12) = 42.8%
Kinetic 1-(1-0.25)*(1-0.12) = 34%
Explosive 1-(1-0.2)*(1-0.12) = 29.6%

Compare with the Maller, which also has 4% bonus to all armor resistances. The Fitting window shows: EM 52%, Thermal 38%, Kinetic 28%, Explosive 24%.

Here the math checks out:
EM 1-(1-0.5)*(1-0.04) = 52%
Thermal 1-(0.35)*(1-0.04) = 37.6%
Kinetic 1-(1-0.25)*(1-0.04) = 28%
Explosive 1-(1-0.2)*(1-0.04) = 23.2%

Is this a bug in the Fitting window or in the Punisher bonus description? If the Punisher has indeed a 12% armor resistance bonus that makes for the most effective defense among all T1 factional frigates.

Here is my Punisher fit:

[Punisher, Amarra Swiftblade's Punisher]
400mm Rolled Tungsten Compact Plates
Damage Control II
Small I-a Enduring Armor Repairer
Extruded Compact Heat Sink
Micro Auxiliary Power Core I

1MN Y-S8 Compact Afterburner
Fleeting Compact Stasis Webifier

Small Focused Modal Pulse Laser I
Small Focused Modal Pulse Laser I
Small Focused Modal Pulse Laser I
Small Focused Modal Pulse Laser I

Small Trimark Armor Pump I
Small Energy Collision Accelerator I
Small Energy Burst Aerator I

Multifrequency S x8

With full skills, this PVE Frigate has an effective defense of 6701 HP; that is higher than my Coercer Destroyer!

Regards

Both are 4% per level bonuses. The per level is tied to different skills: Amarr Frigate for the Punisher and Amarr Cruiser for the Maller.

So if you're getting 12% for the Punisher and 4% on The Maller, I'm guessing you have Amarr Frigate III and Amarr Cruiser I. The maximum bonus you can get is 20% at level V.

Oh, thank you for clarifying that! I thought that the lv2-3 ship skills are only used to unlock the next ship class; I did not know that they actually improve the bonuses. Training Amarr Destroyer lv2-3... :)

As a rule of thumb, if you're going to use a ship much at all, it's worth training the relevant spaceship command skill to 4. If you're going to use a ship loads, or if you are going to be upgrading to the advanced T2 versions of it, you'll want to train the skill to 5. But that's a longer-term concern, as going from 4 to 5 is 80% of the total time spent going from 0 to 5; you get 80% of the benefit of the skill from the 20% of the total training time that it takes to go from 0 to 4. So aiming for level 4s in spaceship skills when you're new is usually the way to go.
