Just clarifying a fine point: Both Core and Combat probes can scan down signatures. From the Wiki: All scan probes can be used for scanning down cosmic signatures. Combat scan probes can also scan structures, ships and drones. Wrecks, cargo containers and cloaked ships cannot be scanned with probes.

Just to pile on: You are, of course, customizing your probes into a cube formation for better scanning results.

And listen to Ernesto: carry a extra set of probes (that fit your launcher!). Otherwise you will meet my alt who is a 911 operator in Signal Cartel. They rescue stranded pilots out of wormholes.

And to reinforce the most important point: Don't use probes, use D-Scan.

Agreed, however clarification here is that combat probes are twice the base scan range and half the strength of cores. The base scan range can be overcome with a lot of manual positioning in the probe scanner screen, but the signal strength hit will make the harder (and more profitable) sites near impossible to get to 100%.

The sensor strength and maximum deviation are both given at the base scan range. This can make combat probes seem much worse than core probes. But to get comparable stats you need to multiply the combat probe stats by two so that you are comparing sensor strength and scan deviation at same scan range and see that the combat probes are actually equal to core probes.

The probe attributes are given in very misleading format (it is basically same as turret tracking before it was standardized).

Core scanning probe has scan str of 40.
Combat scanning probe has scan str of 20.

But the core scanning probe value of 40 is for scan range of 0.25 AU while the the combat scanner probe str value of 20 is for scan range of 0.50 AU.

So if you scan with range of 0.50 AU they both have same scan strength of 20.

Though the core scanner probes have the advantage that they can go into tighter formation than combat scanner probes. Core scanner probes can do 0.25 AU scans while combat scanner probes can't do smaller than 0.50 AU. But also core scanner probes acn't scan larger than 32 AU while combat probes can scan 64 AU (big scan area is rarely needed though).

But just to agree with others there is no point in fitting expanded launcher unless you intend to scan and warp to ships/drones/structures. D-scan is what you use to see what is in space and approximately where things are.

Uggggh thank you for that info, seems I was taught misinformation. Hate to have propagated it.

So the difference only comes down to the fitting values between the launchers, though that is no small difference.
