Ok you fitting superstars this one is a blank canvas. There are no UniWiki or Fleet-Up fittings for the Bustard so feel free to suggest fits that work well for you.
As a start point I have trawled the zKillBoard to arrive at the most popular fit being used lately. Please comment on it.
Thanks Avrin.

I would like to gently point out that unlike combat-fit ships (especially fleet combat-fit ships), checking zkill for hauling-fit ships will tend to select the worst fits, as DSTs' and blockade runners' chief merit is that they are fairly hard to kill if properly fit.

Also, note that it's quite difficult to successfully MWD cloak trick with an overheated AB (the overheat bonus makes it technically possible, but I think only with a shinier afterburner), and that your best tank is always the MWD cloak trick. The other tank is a backup to let you reapproach the gate with the heated AB. So you probably want dual prop to make that work well.

Thanks Raido.
Your zKill comment makes sense.
I'll look into changing up to a 50MN MWD and edit the fit.

If the DST is used for hauling valuable cargo (1bil+) I think it is best to bling it a bit.

If throwing extra 200 mil on the fit saves your 1 bil cargo even once it is very good deal.

Notes on fitting:
* Hauling is boring. Having to MWD+cloak trick every time gets old fast and some people use stealth bombers for ganking so you won't be seeing them on the gate. So I would rely primarily on tank to survive.
* Agility modules are useless. Single prop mod cycle (AB or MWD) will get you to warp in 10 seconds regardless of your agility (except some really slow ship). Protip: Set auto repeat off so the prop mod will cycle only once when you activate it.

Here is one rather tight all tank fit I quickly put together. Both CPU and PG are at 99% with all V. Swapping one power diagnostic system for rector control unit and blinging the resist modules make it much easier to fit.

Thanks Shintu,

I have 103% on CPU for that fit but I think that is within the guidelines. Any comments?

Thanks Hirmuolio,

This is a strong fit. 160k EHP!

Maybe we have a contender for the fit? Anyone care to comment on Hirmuolio's fit? AB vs MWD seems to be the sticking point at the moment.

Thanks.

From what I have been able to conclude, there are two principle DST fits.

A) Highsec. These are best fit with tank, and more of it the better.

The Impel is the last word in tank: up to 1.1M EHP for roughly 40 seconds. The Occator is second best with good utility (triple prop is a thing for some people) or dual prop with a good buffer. I don't like the shield DSTs, because their tank interferes with their prop mods. My DST uses dual prop with an afterburner for align time and a MJD for bumping immunity with just over 400k EHP. Any DST with less than 400k EHP for tank fit is not a good DST fit.

Another problem with shield DSTs is Pithum C-Type AIFs are rather expensive compared to even C-Type EANMs for the Impel and Occator.

Here's the best I could come up with. 408k EHP with everything overloaded and all V, 448k EHP with Genolution implant set with SM-705 implant. Do not use CDFE rigs on ships with at least one shield extender module. You may elect to swap for RF LSEs depending on prices and how high you have trained SU. SU V is really nice on super tight fits.

Prices for DSTs have gone up because of the costs of T2 materials. For that reason you should really invest in your tank. I spent about 2 days wrangling over my DST fit, and I'm pretty happy with it. There are three things that will scare me: Tornados on the ingate (multiple), bomber blobs and Caracal ganks. Through my research I found multiple references to a particular character who multiboxes (see other characters on any good DST kill) the Rammstein Gang usually near Niarja and specializes in ganking DSTs. He made me sit up straight and seriously think about my tank.

DSTs which rely on the cloak + MWD trick are not immune to a proper setup involving a decloaker. People forget that industrials are slow, and they don't move very much from their initial spawn point on the gate, so they're easy to decloak. Blockade runners are different.

B) Lowsec, Nullsec and W-space.

For these areas of space you should focus on evasion or evasion with an okay tank. The Occator is the best for these areas (people seem to like the triple prop setup for some reason), but this page isn't about it, so I won't get into that. The Mastadon is probably the worst, because of its shield tank but has too many lows.

When using a DST in these quarters of space you should go escorted. A basic Derptron or my favorite Slasher is an excellent choice to go ahead, then either a Caracal if you're going cheap; the Osprey Navy Issue makes a decent escort ship to fend off interceptors and cloaky dictors. DSTs like these are best used to haul stuff like cruiser hulls and other annoying things that won't fit in a Blockade Runner and you can't get someone to JF or cargo Rorqual it out. If it's just about 10k m3, a low/W-space/nullsec fitted blockade runner is probably a much better choice, particularly if you can sort out a bridge with a BLOPs.

Another option would be to fit up with a minor tank and a cyno if you're operating in places where your favorite large nullsec bloc lives, but I'd rather have it escorted by something else that can carry the cyno because it's kind of bad to get stuck there on grid for 10 minutes with 5b in your hold even with triage on field. Okay BB probably won't be able to cook your 400k EHP DST with a triage carrier on field, but when things escalate real bad it's best for non-combat ships to not be there.

Wow 815k EHP overheated. Remember when stressed you are going to take advantage of the ship bonus and overheat hardeners/repairers.

Regarding W-Space/Nullsec, being nimble is not always better especially if your corp/alliance depends on your haul. If you have a response fleet ready you might be able to tank it out until you get your primary/secondary backup.

So between AND Not sure about putting a 1 billion fit on the Wiki. It wouldn't make sense as a fit if your haul is worth much less than the ship. Lets narrow this one down.

From the Nimble fits the one with the Burst Jammer adds another trick to the arsenal. When caught in a nimble fit the extra tank won't help much.

Ya the burst jammer on the MJD could be a lifesaver. Even if you're bubbled if you can burst off the sabre etc that is scramming you, then you can MJD out of the bubble.

For high sec hauling, I wouldn't recommend any active tank modules at all. Assuming I would be surprised on a gate etc, I don't want to have to rely on reaction time to save myself, and hauling though high is one of those things I tend to do passively while doing something else on the other account.

Then in that case you go off the gank limit. Or you might be just worth a shot anyways.

Most of the time now I use a max tank fit Orca to shuffle stuff around, but the DST is nice. You can't be bumped by Machs reliably, but your high tank levels are really only possible with heated active modules.

If you're hauling 3b in a DST you shouldn't be multiboxing other monitors in the highsec travel lanes half AFK. But it's your loss.
