Carrier Discussion

Hey guys,

So I started playing eve about 8 or more years ago and have been on a 6 year break and just started playing again about a month ago.

My dream ship since I first started was the Chimera. I finally got the skills for it last week, had one built at the NSC, and just now assembled it, ta-da:

I have already been warned countless times already that E-U doesn't really do capital ships, so you don't need to give me that whole bit again. I just wanted to finally own it and do some ratting with it now and again.

Anyway, I was thinking, what if we did start to support capital ships in a limited way? I would even be willing to spearhead a carrier sub-group or something like that, but seeing as how I have only *just now* assembled my first carrier, I'm probably not the best one to lead such a venture. I have been getting advice from a couple corp members and a guy named Wiggles on how to rat as safely as I can with it in nullsec, but I would like to try some player-v-player combat with it at some point, and if there are other corp members that can fly carriers or can fly ships to support them, that would be pretty cool, no? I mean, the chimera cost me 1.1bil, which is basically nothing when I have lost 3x 4bil Rattlesnakes in the first month I started playing again, so isn't it really down to the individual if they are willing to risk the loss or not? I mean, I just want to play and have fun - I've been told a lot I should "get X carrier" instead, and I just think.. but why? I like the Chimera and I want to play with it. I swear, some people would fly around in a grey box if it had better stats than another ship - that's not me - I do what I find fun, it's a game, I'm not gonna cry if I get killed in it, I'm a grown man for petes sake.

Anyway, the point of this topic is mostly to see if there's any interest from other members of the corp/alliance that would like to form a small capital ship squad of some sort, I mean, why not if that's what people wanna do right?

Anyway I'm not sure what else to say I just wanted to post this publicly and get it out there and see what others feel about it.

At the very least, I just plan to do some ratting in mine now and again, keeping my Gila/Rattlesnake as my main ship, but why not let those that want to form a cap sub-group or something?

Again, I literally just unpacked my ship half an hour ago, so I wouldn't be the best person to lead this charge, but I'm willing to learn and build on that if there is interest.

Re: Carrier Discussion

I find your post intriguing, as I am 1 day and 13 hours away from a comand ships and command destroyers, (Gilante), and 18 days away from one thats begining to be effective: also a few hours away from a smoldering wreck. (A few days for Caldari, and 40 for the other two).
I am not even sure of the differences, if the exist, between a command ship and a command destroyer.
So the next six months I will be working on basic survival, but if you are still interested then, and I have no doubt you will be, perhaps then will be the time to work on the practicalities.
The whole thing about who is in charge comes down to who is responsible for every one else having a good time, in which case there is enough responsibility to go around for everyone involved to share; and if you are waiting for the sense of being ready to be in charge, I suspect you will be waiting forever.
I think if we all preprared for the fact that it may end as a glorious disaster, they may be nothing to hold us back. Plus I have seen a fit, for the magus, for gass mining, and I have not done that yet.
It is a sandbox game, so lets play in the sand; the reality is the level of support that we can expect from eve uni, but as Cheryl Tunt states, "You're not my space supervisor!"

Re: Carrier Discussion

I am in a similar situation as you, having had my eye on a Carrier for the whole time I have been interested in EVE.

I'm still a few months away from training into capital ships, and other things always get in the way of course. However, I would be interested in a specialist group, and would be happy to move down to NSC at that time.

In short, very interested.

Just to put the original post into context ...

...it did not go as planned.

Re: Carrier Discussion

Yes, to put it in context, it ended in disaster, and perhaps a rational mind would reach the conclusion that such a venture should be avoided or discouraged.

However, what would such a mind responsive to the idea of spending time claiming to fly star-ships, thousands of years in the future, (or the past), or in an alt. universe, in the future (or past) if alt universes share our time.

So I say [think Bill Pullman as Pres. Thomas J. Whitmore in Independence Day, the final speech] cast aside all constraints of common-day reality, return to the stars in capital ships, every know and then, in order to have fun before the things blow up.

I suspect from this, folks are gathering around ratting sites, due to the number of videos of carriers and super-carriers, destroying wave upon wave of pirates, so that they may hunt the carriers. I does not undermine the original argument, only point out the difficulties, in terms of fleet formation, capital ships no doubt require immense support. etc etc.

But nether the less, in the sense of a number of capsules, who live by general eve-uni rules, but who follow their own side project, and wishing only the joy of flying big ships onto the course of eventual destruction: [think of a line of dots stretching into an unknown, but in actual fact know future....

In short I think we should do it; set up a group of future capital-ship pilots; Does anyone know how to do that?

Echerie Saissore: will you join us.
ZephyrLexx: I think you already have, I think its me that joining, but that spoils the rhetoric...

Ernesto Guevarti: your comment is sensible, well put, and a good, well intentioned warning, but we fly star-ships; I don't know about you, but I think I lost the plot the first time I undocked, or it might have been years ago with the original Elite...

Re: Carrier Discussion

Hmm, interesting. Is there an AAR coming for this loss, I am very curious to see what we learned! ^^
