A guide to commenting on AARs

Post by Laura Karpinski »

This forum of After Action Reports is accessible to the public, and anyone with a forum account can post replies to posts here. This is because EVE University is a place to learn, and one of the best ways to learn is to ask for feedback on how you did from people who have done it before. Having said that, EVE University is different to a lot of corporations and it is important that those commenting understand and respect our rules and culture.

Special points to consider for EVE University fleets

For those people who have not been a member of EVE University before, it is useful for you to know the following:
  • Many of our FCs are brand new to FCing. They are probably not (currently) experienced at doing this. EVE University has no pre-requisites for FCs, so someone could conceivably be FCing on their first week in corp. The AAR you are reviewing could well be the first fleet they have taken out, and yes that means sometimes they will make poor calls.
  • The majority of our members are inexperienced. They tend to have low SP and most fleets contain at least one member who is on their very first fleet. This means that the FC has the additional job of trying to guide these very new players through the basic fleet commands, e.g. how to align, how to fleet warp etc. It also means that some of them will occasionally lemming and do something the FC did not expect. That comes with the territory of teaching very inexperienced players.
  • EVE University provides a Ship Replacement Program (SRP) which covers the costs of losing certain ships, as well as hangars where new players can grab some ship hulls and modules/ammo. It is sometimes a requirement to post an AAR in order for the members who lost ships to claim SRP. The aim is that very new members will not be financially penalised for losing their ship. So if very new players did lose their ships on the fleet, chances are they were reimbursed and did not lose out personally.
How to give constructive feedback on an AAR

We very much welcome feedback on the AARs, but it is important that any feedback is given constructively. To give constructive feedback:
  • Never respond to an AAR in anger. This is not the place for that. If you're upset about something that happened, contact the FC, someone from management, or a student advocate privately, as we usually do in Eve University. If necessary, wait a bit until you can give calm feedback.
  • Be careful how you word things. Bear in mind we have people from all over the world covering a wide range of cultural differences so it can be easy to mistakenly offend someone. Comments should be aimed at strengthening the FC and fleet members next time, not at tearing them down. On the other side, please assume good faith when reading other peoples' comments.
  • Don't make things personal. Its definitely not ok to make personal attacks on the FC or other fleet members (unless it's Mike), and anyone making such personal attacks will have their access to comment removed. Focus on the behaviour and decisions, not the individual. Similarly, fleet participants, please be mindful that a person pointing out gameplay errors or alternate strategies is usually trying to help.
  • Focus on things that can be changed, and be realistic. Saying "I recognise that most fleet members have low SP, but next time it would be better to fit your ships like this..." is good. Saying "EVE University needs to use the following elite ships for every fleet..." is not going to happen.
  • Provide solutions, not just problems. Its not useful to just point out faults with no suggestion for improvement.

Agree. 100% bonus points if the AAR tells a good story!

And nice formatting is nice.

Did not work on Firefox
Did work on Edge
It wasn't joking when it said you need to press the 'process fleet log' button many (10x) times!
