[SOLO] J Rollard Solo PVP Adventures

I have too old of a character to be as bad at solo pvp as I am. I have recently decided that I would start recording myself, analyzing it, and posting it with comments to see if that helps me reflect properly on my failures. If you all have suggestions and comments, I would love to hear them. I'm going to post each excursion as a comment.

So, first off, all of these are me dropping into plexes last night.

Check out video of the fails!
and the fit:
Spoiler
[Incursus, ScramKite]
IFFA Compact Damage Control
200mm Rolled Tungsten Compact Plates
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Small Ancillary Armor Repairer

1MN Afterburner II
Fleeting Compact Stasis Webifier
Faint Epsilon Scoped Warp Scrambler

125mm Railgun II
125mm Railgun II
125mm Railgun II

Small Transverse Bulkhead I
Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I
Small Auxiliary Nano Pump I

Hobgoblin II x1

Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S x720
Nanite Repair Paste x16
The first one was me dropping in on a Tristan. I had been flying around looking for fights for 30 minutes, so at this point I'd take anything. I kind of knew I was going to get kited, and I was not disappointed. He was fast... but only later did I realize hat I had turned off my AB for no apparent reason. As it turns out, my ship with no AB is as slow as a ship with no AB. Who knew? Once I started getting really worked, I just bailed.
~ escape

The second one was my first legit pvp victory. It was a Condor. I am not even sure if he fired at me. I am going to pretend that it has no diminishing effects on my victory. I landed, had everything pre-heated but my guns, because I am an idiot. I started shooting, and it was over.

The last one was a Slasher. I had never taken a fight with a Slasher before. He got uncomfortably close to my face and melted it. I had no idea Slashers were so fast. Consequently, in my rail scram-kite Incursus, I'd probably avoid this one in the future because I had absolutely no range control. Did I mention Slasher's were fast?

Dropping into plexes last night in a Coercer. Pretty slow night overall. There was a big fleet of Dramiels harassing everyone, but I managed to avoid them. Anyway...

I dropped in on an Algos. It was pretty uneventful. I landed, hit her with webs, and started shooting. She was repping, but she went down fairly quickly. I am not sure she realized she wasn't pointed and could leave whenever she wanted.

Dropped into a medium plex in a Coercer. I probably shouldn't have taken the fight, but it was right next to home and it seemed like a good learning experience. It totally was. I actually managed to get her to about 3/4 before I went down. It does a shocking amount of damage, even in less-than-ideal range.

Dropped into a medium plex in a Coercer. I was pretty confident I could win this one. I landed, applied webs, opened fire. Then I remembered that range matters, so I scooted away a little bit and he went down.

Dropped into a small plex in a Coercer. This was a lot worse than I expected it to be. I landed, applied webs, opened fire. I was at about 11k out, which isn't perfect, but it isn't bad, but I was basically applying no damage. I wish I had been recording it, but I wasn't. Anyway...

Dropped into a small plex in a Coercer. I fought this gal yesterday. I got her into hull before I noticed that she had dual reppers. That explains why she lets me grind down to hull before she reps. I won't take this fight again.
kill details: -23,534,515.00

There were two people flying around campus who are at war with campus. I was outside a small plex when this one landed and started attacking me from a ways out. He was barely applying damage from 17k out, so I switched to longer range ammo and melted him.
kill details: 49,066,708.00

This was the other dude who was flying around campus. I kept seeing him in a firetail when I would dock up, so I just camped outside campus orbiting FedMart until he showed up. Then I locked him up and melted him.

So the enyo has this module called the assault damage control. It massively boosts resists. What is likely happening is she is waiting to hit hull, pops it, and starts regaining buffer. the ADCU makes it quite rough to fight AFs in a t1 dessie as 15 seconds is a long time.

Ahhh, that explains that then. So taking that fight was probably stupid in the first place. Maybe I need to try out an Enyo. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm getting ready to get some Amarr AF's as first T2 ship for solo. Is it better to pop mid-armor or low-armor/high hull?

In the roam where we dropped a bunch of Merlins on you this weekend (my first time as FC), one of the fights in Tama was against an Enyo. People generally agreed that the reason why we only lost scouts (almost lost me) before taking it out was because the pilot popped it too early.

Generally you want to do it low, so you have a chance to rebuild your entire armor buffer, as you will only get to pop it once in a fight (unless its really weird situation). Then whoever is shooting you has to burn through it again while you are still repping.

Thanks for sharing!

I also suck at PvP, but I have some observations from the videos.
  • If a kite is orbiting you, you can sometimes close the gap with manual piloting, alternating between a) aiming where they're aiming instead of just approaching them, and b) slingshotting. This is how I managed to apply to the Merlin and almost kill the Tristan in that 1v2 last night.
  • If they're well out of range of your ammo, stop firing to save cap. Being in the habit of asking "Should I be firing this ammo right now?" is valuable. I have a hard time with it, but it's starting to help.
  • When you can see you're going to die, switch to the Warpout tab (unless you want to be podded for faster reship). In a small and busy system, the available warpouts in the Combat tab can all be deadly.

Also, bring the videos back!

Being able to watch someone else's fights is huge. In the heat of battle, overwhelmed with information, it's hard to keep track of what's going on. Watching someone else's use of modules and range control without the heat of battle is so valuable.

This is awesome. I kind of lose my mind in fights (hence the lack of drone launching), but when I calm down, the manual piloting is for sure next on my list. Very cool to hear it works. The range/ammo suggestion is great too. Again, it seems obvious, but it wasn't to me. I am actually getting better with the warpout tab. Thanks for all the tips. Super helpful!

I hadn't done the videos because I was on my linux machine for a bit, and it just gets murdered when I record. I am back on windows now, so recording is quite a bit easier. More videos to come.

Yeah. I know about lack of drone launching being an issue for me as well because I don't think in the heat of battle. If someone in charge isn't saying "drones out," I'm probably not going to remember it.
