[AAR] Solitude WH Structure Defense: Grand Theft Tengu

On 29/07/2020 a request for help appeared on the Solitude discord channel:

SPOILER WARNING!
Hello. Someone asked about WHC tags seen in a wormhole off Boysitn.
It's my alt corp (blue to EUni), some ships I moved into it monts ago came from assets moved fromWHC and the names were retained.
I'm in the process of evacutation, since someone decided to shoot the armor off my Astra whil I had a few days break. Maybe I should get the app & have it send me structure notifications.
Anyhow, the highsec static wormole connects directly to Boystin, the hole of my alt corp is J122220, and soon after the next downtime, the structure cycle will be up. I'm, not experienced in structure defence, my main bashing knowledge comes from joining EUni in shooting war HQ's
I'll have either a main or an alt sitting in the structure firing missiles at potential hostiles.
Since Boystin is directly connected, there may be opportunity for Solitude members to ambush potential bashers. I notice that the Solitude mumble channel is deserted, though.

Solitude locals were eager to lend a hand, and they already killed a Tengu inside the wh, so I offered to help. We started with the intelligence gathering, but having no eyes on the first two timers, we had no idea how the grid would develop. The only link we had was the KM of that Tengu pilot. I had a hunch that these guys were looking for an easy payday, and probably they would leave their guard down since they had gone uncontested. Also, they left the Soli connection up, because who is ever going to bother them from Solitude?

A glass cannon doctrine began to form in my mind. Meanwhile, I also pinged NSC and the FC team to gather some more advice. Biwako was really helpful with intel gathering, as he discovered ties of the attackers to The Dark Venture corp, a WH group capable of bringing some serious firepower. He linked us their staging and warned us about connections to that chain. He also advised me to build a doctrine around the WH effects, if there were any. As were were in a magnetar, high dps and low application would decide the battlefield. He also had us make a census of all control towers in the wh, but luckily, there was only one, and it was not recent.
So the two scenarios were: small, lazy gang trying to either extort and loot an easy target or maybe a bored big group looking for an opportunistic target. They sent an eve mail to the structure owner that night, further reinforcing my belief they were in for the easy cash, not for a fight.

Longbow cormorant is our most common long range doctrine, but tracking would have been the deciding factor, and I wanted something even easier. Blap Talwar came to our rescue: long range, perfect application, low sig radius on mwd. Perfect to trade extremely well against a light enemy grid.
The other component of the fleet would be stealth bombers: if there were just a few of us, we would still be able to inflict some damage in a hit-and-run fashion, especially with a structure on our side. This would turn to be helpful against an enemy heavy armor doctrine. I decided to ping for both, using the proximity of our staging and the few minutes on the timer to decide on which one to use, depending on the enemy comp.

PREPARATIONS

Almost all was decided on the fly, and came to be in the few hours before the attack. I had Cedric make us some tacs both on the structure and the HS entrance. Celine found us a close connection to Amarr, Hirmuolio and Jellyson kicked the Soli indy machine into motion and I had my alt do a couple of DST trips to provide us with the bulk of the Talwars, modules and some bombers. Pings were sent, posts were made and just one hour before the timer, we were...almost ready.

Analee was bridging bombers in from all New Eden, we got people pouring in from the Amarr connection, jump cloning and making the trip from all their campuses! I had hoped for a small gang engagement, I found myself a full 30 people fleet ready for battle! It was simply amazing!
At that point, I had all people who could not fly a bomber reship into tackle frigs, as I was having trouble filling some specialist roles. Many thanks to Biwako and Pink, who came to our help from WHC, as I was going to need as much experience as I could in large WH fights. I had them as bubbler and cloaky prober on grid, had Tolerin reship to a heavy tackle ramjag and decided to have Analee be our bomber combat tackle. Having all experienced pilots cover crucial roles, we went over a very short newbro speech and final preparations. With the bombers cloaked outside and all the tackle frigs docked inside, we waited for the timer.
Leading a combined arms fleet of bombers and non-cloakies was going to be tricky, so I split teams and had them operate a bit independently, so as not to warp all in the same spot. I had two cloaky eyes and the structure owner to provide intel on the grid. As our final stroke of luck, all other wh connections had died, and we had control of the only HS exit. All the ships they had, were going to be seeded, not brought from outside. The HS exit was not on Dscan from the structure.

Hostiles began to appear on grid a few minutes after the timer. They were lazily trickling bombers on grid. Two in one spot, another one a bit futher.
Analee was close to the duo, Pink was near the lone one. My first idea was to have the tackle frigs land on Analee, as the more combat capable tackle, and have Biwako warp and bubble on top of Pink, as not to decloak the combat prober, but Pink suggested we go for max efficiency and bubble the bigger group and have t1 tackle land on him. I knew that ordering the tackle to land at range, still someone would land and decloak him, but we accepted Pink's noble sacrifice nonetheless. The hostiles had trickled in two more bombers, split evenly between the two spots. I had the two warp-ins do a little countdown, and in the following order I had:

1)Biwako and Tolerin spike the hole and hold cloak.
2)All t1 frigs undock and warp to the entrance.
3)Analee give the warpin for the bubbler and ramjag and decloak.
4)All t1 frigs take the hole and warp to Pink at 10km.
5)Bombers jump the hole on contact and warp to Analee at 50km as not to get caught on the bubble.

ENGAGEMENT

Both the bubble team and the t1 frigs team landed tackle. One side effect of the Magnetar that we hadn't considered was the lowered targeting range. Since we were the one that were brawly, it wasn't totally bad, but it meant we needed to reduce our engagement range with the bombers. Still, our coordinated shock and awe tactic cleared the grid of the bombers and was to have some amazing effects on enemy morale:

[13:08:08] EVE System > Channel changed to Local : J122220
[13:08:42] Katy Pryde > HOLD
[13:10:00] Dracknor > Is this a defense fleet or would you like to group the KM on astra?

Suddenly, a Tengu uncloaked at 100+ off from us, and I had the ramjag burn for him. Since the Tengu was sniping on our combat prober, he removed our only way we had to land on top of him. It looks like our fleet made him very nervous, and he warped sun, a mistake that cost him dearly. I had the t1 frigs land on sun at different ranges, and we landed tackle on him! As the bombers were still clorping, I hear on coms "Tengu pilot has ejected!"
This guy had already lost the same ship yesterday to the Soli campus hunters, so he wasn't keen on doubling down on the record and was hoping to save some SP. I weighted a KM+SP loss vs a war trophy for us and decided to steal the Tengu instead!
With a bit of effort we stop DPS, have Analee board the ship, and we take it back to the structure! The enemy morale is utterly broken and they start evacuating the wh. We combat probe their looting industrial and blap it too, to save them the pain of moving it around!

[13:19:24] Agent Blackbear > i ejecated
[13:19:25] Agent Blackbear > you can have it
[13:19:35] ZeIda Pinkdottir > thx
[13:24:57] Katy Pryde > Luckiest wormhole EVER.
[13:25:11] Katy Pryde > Too funny!
[13:25:32] Yto Itinen > o7
[13:25:47] Katy Pryde > I mean.. what are the honest odds?
[13:26:55] Yto Itinen > 50/50
[13:27:24] Katy Pryde > :D
[13:45:45] EVE System > Channel changed to Local : Boystin

^^^clicky^^^

We traded a combat prober for 3 bombers, one hauler, one stolen Tengu and eternal glory! Analee wanted to keep the ship and donated the Jita+10% to E-UNI. The structure owner made a generous donation to the Solitude campus.

POSITIVES

1)We formed a great fleet at the drop of the hat! We put this up in 4 hrs or less, the turnout was nothing short of amazing!
2)The combined arms worked well, as our win condition at this point was to land tackle, since we had amazing DPS.
3)We saved the structure, had some amazing content in Solitude and during the AUTZ nonetheless!
4)New pilots responded very well to commands most of the time, the Tengu tackle was all their doing.
5)The support work for the fleet to happen was amazing! We didn't simply go the extra mile, we did the whole marathon! I even had people offer to JF for other operations, if needed. If was a great team effort all around!
7)I had my first taste of large scale WH engagements, and probably the most numerous fleet I have ever commanded!

IMPROVEMENTS

1) Reserving myself the option to switch doctrines on the fly created a bit of confusion, but we all managed to switch from Talwars to tackle frigs very quickly. I suppose I should clarify this better next time!
2) We had a pilot show in a Machariel, without being in coms. I understand Soli locals get little to no fleet experience, but we show up in doctrines for a reason. The BS rolling the hole would have had very negative consequences.
3)We understood way more intimately the difficulties of fighting at range in a Magnetar. The range penalty is really impactful, so next time we will probably go brawl heavy for fights in Magnetars.
4) Some people had trouble stopping DPS and unlocking the Tengu for us to board it. I tried wording it differently, and still it took us some time to reach a result.

Thanks to all for the great fleet, fly dangerous!

Re: [AAR] Solitude WH Structure Defense: Grand Theft Tengu

This was brilliant - I had a lot of a fun and it really was great to see a lot of people help out a uni member, especially all the way out via Solitude.
Those sun-warping tackle frigates was very well done indeed.

Thanks once again Yto for sorting this out, and Hirm/Jelly for sorting out the contracts 8)

Might be worth posting a list of pilots, if you have them, to show engagement.

Re: [AAR] Solitude WH Structure Defense: Grand Theft Tengu

Thank you Celine!

I added a list of pilots, which is not guaranteed to be 100% reliable, from the AAR tool.
The battle report will have all those who shot at least once, if you click on the link!

Fly fun!

Great fleet Yto, much fun. And much sensor damping was applied :-).
