Cosmic Signatures in Drifter Systems

Cosmic Signatures in Drifter Systems
Image

All over New Eden, in Systems with Jove Observatories, Unidentified Wormholes appear. These lead to one of five unique Drifter Systems. Inside, there are about sixty Wormholes Cosmic Signatures leading to all corners of New Eden.

Cosmic Signatures in Drifter Systems is a datasheet with 1100 labeled Bookmarks, 828 unique Wormhole Cosmic Signatures, recorded during 18 Nullbear Hunt Fleets. The data was captured using the PvP Finder I originally constructed to help locate capsuleer rich areas.

Wormhole Cosmic Signatures

We scanned down twice as many Cosmic Signatures in Vidette and Redoubt Drifter Systems then in Sentinel and Barbican. Although we prefer one Drifter System effect over the other, fresh Unidentified Wormholes are rare, so we couldn't be too picky.
Spoiler
Drifter Wormhole System Effect Count Percentage
Sentinel J055520 Red Giant 127 15.3
Barbican J110145 Cataclysmic Variable 145 17.5
Vidette J164710 Magnetar 257 31.0
Redoubt J174618 Wolf-Rayet 299 36.1
Conflux J200727 Pulsar 0 0.0
We avoided the Conflux System like the plague because its Pulsar effect greatly favors shield tanked ships.
About 22% of all Wormholes we found were reaching the end of its natural lifetime. Wormholes say this only if they will collapse within 4 hours. Therefor, the maximum empirical life expectancy of a Wormhole inside Drifter Systems is 4 hours / 0.22 = 18 hours.
Spoiler
Expiration Type Count Percentage
EOLs 181 21.7
Non-EOLs 647 78.3
Wormholes in Drifter Systems mostly lead to Null Security Regions. However, about a quarter lead to High Security space making them a viable, though risky, form of quick travel.
Spoiler
Security of Destination Count Percentage
High 211 25.5
Low 70 8.5
Null 475 57.4
Wormhole 72 8.7
Different Null Security Regions have different amounts of System with Jove Observatories. Although we found a Wormhole leading to every Null Security Region, their distribution is chaotic. This could simply be because 800 Cosmic Signatures is still a small sample size. For example, in Perrigen Falls there are 23 Jove Observatories but we only found 4 Wormholes leading to them.

Thank you to all Explorers who have helped scan down Cosmic Signatures in pursuit of Ishtars and Gilas! :)

Trivia

Did you know Marek Holmberg had to manually delete more then 150 Bookmarks because the one who shall remain nameless forgot to expire the Bookmarks? :P

Did you know it took me 5 months to gather all this data? A Nullbear Hunt Fleet is only scheduled once a week, maximum. When key members were missing, the Fleet would be cancelled and sometimes I could not attend, which further prolonged the project. Then there is data clean-up, writing the Report, typesetting, promoting, making the data publicly available, ...

Marek was interested in "How many hours did we spend scanning down Cosmic Signatures?". Great question Marek! If I gave you the answer I would rob you of the pleasure of diving into the data and finding the answer :P :D

Happy travelling and happy Nullbear Hunt anniversary! Remember: don't get Jamyled! :D

You can use them for travel-shortcuts, hunting in Nullsecspace (as we do thursdaysin Nullbear-Hunt Fleets, we use Assault frigs but also do have easy newbro-ships to tag along ;) ) or run the combat sites without (otentialy VERY hard!).

Great summary of a load of work, Arin. Props to you!
I made the top 10 - even though I feel like i scanned more than 18 sigs...then again the numbers never lie - yours at least!

Kudos to all the scanners o7

Cryptic, everything Mike said is true. I'll add that you can also try and attack the central Drifter structure. The Arataka Research Consortium does that perhaps once a month in Amarr Tier Three Destroyers, Confessors. :)

Thanks Mike! :)

You are absolutely right, you did scan down a lot more then 18 Cosmic Signatures. However, I can only track Bookmarks created during Events I attended. :) This applies to everyone! The data suffers from an extreme observer bias, but I assure everyone that the conclusions are not compromised because it does not matter who created the Bookmark or scanned down the Cosmic Signature.

I have deleted how many Signatures each Explorer scanned down and sorted all Explorers by name. :) Cooperation over competition! :)
