Note on the new Jump Drive: This device is clearly not for default-sized worlds. In fact, even our 3x-extended world distances have minimal use for it, and I'd categorize it as "handy", but possibly not worth the hassle of building except perhaps as a "base relocator". It would be of great use, however, in even larger but similarly dense worlds like some other servers use. (Usually for PvP, but even a PvE world could be interesting.)

I'm mentioning this because it'll be up to the player base if, when we start up the server again, we go with the current setting, or we increase the world size enough to make Jump Drives more useful.

Just realized that I posted this to the wrong thread. So here it is again in the correct thread. :)

It looks like we're at a general lull so we'll keep the server shut down and not-updated for now. However, if at any point someone wishes to start playing again, then just reply in this thread. It should be fairly easy to get it patched up to the latest version and running again whenever someone wants to jump back in.

EDIT: Also, restarting with a world reset is also an option, and as more time passes it may actually be more preferred.

The server is (sorta-kinda) back up again with a new belt designated Aldrat Hidden Belt 16. However, we won't start up new threads or anything because it isn't really being used except for a bit of testing by myself. We'll continue to use the AHB15 threads if any discussion is needed. Anybody is welcome to jump onto and mess around, though. All the usual rules still apply.

The main reason we won't go through all the trouble of making it an "official EEP world" is, as Seamus stated above, we anticipate major changes to the world content/generation that is likely to happen within a month or two. So it is not recommended that anybody start up any major construction projects at this time because we will probably be resetting again in around that timeframe. (Though nothing is stopping you if you really, really want to try it anyway.)

The only major change to AHB16 is that it is set up as an "infinite world". But please play normally and do not fly off and try to generate a crap-ton of new asteroids. It would be nice to have at least some semblance of control with my testing. :)

We found a new performance issue and workaround in AHB16.

If one travels to a remote asteroid, apparently anything 6 Km or further works, and digs for a bit and then returns to their home asteroid, the server starts to lag, often badly. The theory is that the created floating objects (ore) become a problem when all players leave their vicinity.

The workaround, not tested by myself but tested by others, is to create a player construction in the vicinity of the remote asteroid. It is sufficient to simply drop down a Small Landing Gear (new small ship) and nothing else. Having this player construction in the vicinity avoids the lag. The theory is that it performs some kind of "chunk loading" for that area. Presumably the floaters will eventually drift far enough away that it will result in lag again, but regular server restarts will hopefully prevent this.

It seems the best general rules would be that, if players are to perform remote digging, then they must claim the site with preferably a beacon. If you'd like to share the site for mining, then just add the word "public" to the beacon, and of course don't set down defenses there.

Either that, or create your own faction and set your faction to auto-accept all peace requests. Any other player can then create their own faction and request peace. NPCs don't make peace requests, so the defenses will still shoot at NPCs.

On previous worlds, I usually use gravity generators and Collectors to sweep up rocks, just for the sake of being thorough in my mining.
