Symmetric Box Tournament - August 29, 2020 - 1730 EVE Time

WHAT: Box Tournament!
WHEN: Saturday August 29, 2020; 1730 EVE Time
WHERE: Amygnon (HSC) and Private Mumble

What the Tournament Is:
Over the next couple of weeks, we form teams. Some time before the tournament, each team receives a box. The teams must use the contents of the box to compete.

Themes for this Tournament:
  • The boxes will contain ship hulls, and some ISK for fitting.
  • The hulls will be frigates and destroyers.
  • The goal will be to focus on cheaper, more newbro friend fits this time around.
  • The boxes will be symmetric - every team will receive the same box. The boxes will have variety, but you'll know what your opponents could field, because you can field it too!

How to Sign up:
Reply to this post! Since the boxes are symmetric (not Empire racial like the last couple of tournaments), feel free to just reply that you want to participate, and I'll randomly assign you to a team. Signing up for a specific team is also allowed - joining a team with a couple of specific friends is encouraged, though I'd ask we avoid intentionally creating a team filled with only veteran players (two goals of the tournament, being Learning and Teaching!).

Each team will need a captain. The captain will receive the box. The captain does not have to be the fleet commander on the field the day of the event. If you want to be a team captain, please note so in your signup reply.

Teams are listed in a post below.

Please feel free to sign up as an alternate even after all teams are full. The slots on the team are first come first serve, but having a few alternates is always a good idea, in case some members can't make the event last minute!

"But I'm too new to..."
No you aren't! Come have fun. Blow up some friends, be blown up by some friends! The three main goals of this tournament are:
  • Learning: Certainly something you can do, even as a new player! This event provides an opportunity to learn about fitting and fighting!
  • Teaching: An opportunity for more experienced players to help less experienced players achieve objective 1!
  • FUN. FUN. HAVE FUN.

Tournament Timeline:
  • This posting through (approximately) August 12: Signup
  • Between August 15-August 19: Boxes will be distributed.
  • August 19-August 28: Discuss fits and tactics with your team! Bookmarks will be provided during this window.
  • August 29: Tournament day!

Rules and Format in Posts Below!

Spectators Welcome!:
Not going to fight but want to watch? No problem! Be in system for the event. A bookmark will provide a location to watch from. It is just asked that you have a cloaked ship, or spectate in a capsule, to avoid your presence on the overview confusing the teams on the field.

PRIZES:

Each member of the winning team, will receive a T2 Empire Frigate hull of their choice. See the spoiler below for the possible categories. Prizes will be delivered as soon after the tournament is over and all choices have been made, as possible.

SPOILER WARNING!
Empire factions only - Gallente, Amarr, Caldari, or Minmatar variants of the ship types below
  • Assault Frigate
  • Covert Ops (Scanning or Stealth Bomber)
  • Electronic Attack Ship
  • Interceptor
  • Logistics Frigate

Re: Symmetric Box Tournament - August 29, 2020 - 1730 EVE Time

Current Phase: THE STAGE IS SET - BATTLES COMMENCE AT 1730 AUGUST 29!!!!

The teams have their boxes, their bookmarks, and have been crafting their fits and strategies. At 1730 tomorrow, ammunition is live and fun will be had!

Spectators: All are welcome to participate, and there will be a Bookmark in the HSC Events folder titled "Spectator's Box - Aug 9" to watch from. Please come in a cloaked ship, and move that cloaked ship off the bookmark warpin. If you do not have a cloaky ship, please come in a capsule, so contestants can filter you off their overview!

Here's the contents of the boxes for each of the three teams:

Atron - 4
Catalyst - 4
Coercer - 4
Crucifier - 2
Executioner - 4
Incursus - 6
Inquisitor - 2
Maulus - 2
Navitas - 2
Punisher - 6

Each team may field 0-2 destroyers in each battle, and may only use each hull once in the tournament. The flavor of the box is armor and turrets (though teams are free to fit however they choose, within the rules provided).

Comms: We will be using Alpha comms on Private mumble for all spectators and commentary. If someone wants to "announce" the fights, please feel free to do so! The teams will be in their separate channels for fleet comms while battling.

We also have a chat channel - "Symmetric Box Tourney" - please feel free to join to chat about the tournament!

Hope to see you all there!

Re: Symmetric Box Tournament - August 29, 2020 - 1730 EVE Time

Tournament Format:

The tournament will be a three team, double elimination format tournament. Battles will occur as follows:

  • Battle 1: 2 randomly selected teams face one another.
  • Battle 2: The winner of Battle 1, versus the team that did not fight in Battle 1.
  • Battle 3: The loser of Battle 1, versus the loser of Battle 2. The loser of this battle picks up their second loss, and is eliminated.
  • Battle 4: The winner of Battle 2, versus the winner of Battle 3. If the winner of Battle 2 wins, they become champion.
  • Battle 5: If Necessary - If the winner of Battle 3 wins Battle 4, each remaining team is at one loss each. In that case, Battle 5 is a rematch of Battle 4, with the winner becoming champion!

Re: Symmetric Box Tournament - August 29, 2020 - 1730 EVE Time

Fitting and Planning Rules:

- Teams must use the ship hulls provided. Each team will receive the same hulls.

- ISK provided in the box is a subsidy, not a limit. Teams may choose to spend beyond the ISK provided in the box, but are not required to. If a team spends additional ISK, how they choose to divide that cost among themselves, is an internal team decision.

- Each hull may only be used once in the tournament. Winning a battle or warping off before being destroyed, still removes that hull from your selection for future battles in the tournament.

- Destroyers will be mixed with the frigates in the box, and will have composition limits for each battle. This will be further outlined when the boxes are sent.

- Tech 1, Meta 0-4 modules and rigs only! This means no T2, Faction, Deadspace, Storyline, Officer, or Abyssal mods/rigs are allowed. This rule is intended to push this tournament into more of a level playing field for newbros (future tournaments can/will provide more of an open fitting selection!)

- Tech 1 and Faction ammo is ok. T1 drones only please (and no faction drones).

- No Cloaks permitted.

- Clean clones only! No implants, no combat boosters/drugs! (For newbros who may not have a free jump clone slot and may have learning implants - you can still participate with learning implants in, but note that combat does bring the possibility your clone may be destroyed, so it is still recommended to have a clean clone).

- Contact me if any questions/need for clarity come up.

NOTE:Learning a thing or two about fitting, is an important educational goal for a tournament like this. It is strongly encouraged that ALL team members participate in the fitting conversation once the boxes are provided! You are never too new to start providing input, and learn how to fit a ship/gang!

Re: Symmetric Box Tournament - August 29, 2020 - 1730 EVE Time

Battle Procedures and Rules:

- Teams are asked to be in system, with ships fit and ready, ahead of the start time. With a maximum of five battles possible, it will be important to start on time, and keep things moving!

- The battlefield will be set with tactical bookmarks across the field. These bookmarks will be provided, and will be the same for each team. On grid warping between bookmarks is permitted, but only to the provided bookmarks. Tackle, therefore, is highly encouraged in fits! Bookmarks will be made available after the boxes are made available.

- For each battle, two teams will be called to prepare for battle. There will be two staging points pre-bookmarked in the system. Each team will be given five minutes, once called, to prepare and assemble their team at one of the two staging bookmarks. At the end of the five minutes (or earlier, if both teams confirm ready ahead of schedule), a countdown will begin, and teams will warp to the grid. Teams will have 1 minute for all members to arrive on grid (and must arrive within a few moments of one another - no holding back a warp in to see the other team's positioning!). Initial warp in may be to any of the provided bookmarks, with any offset (up to 100 km) to those bookmarks.

- No warping off grid. Any pilot that leaves the grid, will be considered eliminated from the battle, and may not return to the grid.

- No podding (accidents do happen - so clean clones! But no intentional podding.) Capsules may warp off once their ship is destroyed (back to station to reship for next battle, or to a specific eliminated contestant spectator bench. Do not warp to the main spectator bench, lest you uncloak spectators and sow overview chaos for the surviving members of the battle!).

- If a battle reaches 10 minutes in length from the initial warp in call, each team will be allowed one more warp within 30 seconds. The tournament coordinator will provide warning at 9 minutes, and will call for the final warp at 10 minutes. After the one allowed warp, any further on grid warping, will disqualify the warping team (even if only one member warped). The intent here is to limit a battle if one team can't win but warps infinitely and can't be tackled.

- The team with the last ship(s) remaining on grid, will win the battle.

- The tournament coordinator acts as a final judge/mediator, should something unforeseen occur, including having the ability to declare a battle winner due to lack of clarity due to circumstance, or excessively long battle.

- HAVE FUN AND LEARN SOMETHING!

Re: Symmetric Box Tournament - August 29, 2020 - 1730 EVE Time

Any questions/requests for clarification, will be compiled here, along with the answer:

Please feel free to ask questions in this thread, DM me on discord, or send an EVE Mail!

Question - Can you warp to the provided bookmarks at range?

Answer - Yes. Tourney rules already state this for warp in "Teams will have 1 minute for all members to arrive on grid (and must arrive within a few moments of one another - no holding back a warp in to see the other team's positioning!). Initial warp in may be to any of the provided bookmarks, with any offset (up to 100 km) to those bookmarks." But to be sure it is clear - tactical warps once the battle has commenced, may also be at any offset (0-100 km) to the provided bookmarks.
