Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

Pretty nice sound quailty. The only problem I have with it is that the sound is so good I get feedback from my laptop mic, so I have to use my headset or a pair of headphones :P Other than that epic overlay, epic sound, epic everything. Just one thing. PICK PUSH TO TALK IN THE SETUP!

Very impressed.

Thank you for setting this up.

It's a vast improvement - and Zraltori proof in ease of configuration! (thanks to those who helped out also this afternoon :) )

What key do you use for push to talk? (and can you change it)

Configure - Settings - check the "Advanced" box:

In "Audio Input" select "Push to Talk".
In "Shortcuts", add function - click on unassigned, then select "Push to Talk" - then you'll have to click on the shortcut column and select a PTT key (I personally use right Shift).

Don't forget to apply the changes.

You can select the whisper function in this same window.

Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

After trying it out, I must say the sound quality is quite good.

My only complaint thus far is the Loopback function. Its latency is far too high, making it useless as a sidetone setting.
But that can be dealt with elsewhere, so it's not exactly a critical flaw.

I had to lookup "sidetone", so to help others, this is when a telephone feeds back the speaker's voice at a very low volume to avoid the sense of speaking into a dead or disconnected line and help the user calibrate their volume. This is most important when using a closed headset which blocks out external noise, including the user's voice.

From what I've seen none of the major gaming voice systems have a sidetone feature. While "loopback" sounds promising, my understanding is that it is intended primarily as a testing feature to help you configure your levels without being connected or in an empty room, in which case you want artificially very high latency to avoid feedback, etc.

SlowFlyer on the teamspeak forums wrote:The only way I know to add sidetone when talking is to use the SimHeadset USB sound adapter. It lets you use an aviation headset with a PC and when combined with their free SimPTT software it gives sidetone when you are pressing your PTT key or joystick button. I got it for use with MFS but it works great with all voice application. Check it out at http://www.simradios.com

Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

I don't know if anyone else in my corp has noticed this, but since uni has so many more people this issue might rear its head for some. Mumble overlay and Netflix streaming don't play very nice together (at least for me). This may not be restricted to mumble, but it's the first time I've had the opportunity to use an awesome overlay so it's the first time I noticed it.

I think it's something about how they're both using an overlay layer on the screen. So if you have mumble running, try to watch a movie, and only get sound but no picture - now you know what's going on. The workaround that I'm using is to kill mumble, start up netflix streaming, and bring mumble back up.

Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

You should be able to set a hotkey to disable the overlay - not sure if it works in that situation though.

Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

Works great.

It did take me a minute to figure out how to get the overlay working; it seems you need to start Mumble before Eve, which makes sense I guess.

Thumbs up!

Give it a try, and post your feedback here - obviously it shouldn't be used for fleet ops or anything critical at the moment, but it should be stable.

I may have called the servername 'bob'... Still worked for me tho.

Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

For me, at least, it is a big improvement over TS. When I upgraded my box to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.something, it did very bad things for TS with pulseaudio not suspended. Mumble works fine so now I can have both chat and Eve game sounds. Now if only I could have sound on SISI.

We're a necro of a dead alliance now?

Anyway it's brilliant so far, and the sound quality is pretty damn awesome.

Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

We did some extensive testing on this last night.

Silvonus and myself highlighted some immediate issues that scouts may have with the current build. While having a dedicated scout channel is a very good option, it becomes a little overshadowed by anyone else talking. I think the new release version of Mumble should allow us to scale audio quality and such, so it shouldn't be a particular problem.

Setting some of the whisper commands is a little tricky at first, but I'm confident we can all figure it out with a little practice.

Re: Testing Mumble - A Multi-platform Teamspeak Replacement

Maybe it's time to start drafting the Mumble guide to the wiki. I think it's enough to show how to set push-to-talk and whisper to current channel as that should be enough to have a system similar to the current TS functionality. Link fleet channels with commands channels and that's it.

It does allow the fleet members to smack behind the commands back but so what.
