Looking for assistance from our Canadian and British players

So a lot of you still know my immigration troubles.

As my deportation date approaches, the stress has been rising for me, and the prospect of where my life goes next rises along with it. So here I hope I can get some help and assistance from some of you guys. My plan/goal when I leave the US is to apply for graduate school in Canada or England. I'm open to other countries too, but I don't know where I'll be able to find my programs. I have a Bachlors in Biomedical Engineering, and I'm hoping to go to grad school in that or in Computer Science. The problem is, like most Americans, I know little about the rest of the world. So I'm hoping I can get some help finding schools. I don't know whats good/bad, if its not worth trying because immigration is impossible, etc. I already know I'll be in trouble because a lotta schools ask for references from teachers, and having been out a year, I don't even know if I'll be able to do that, but I have to try.

If I can't get into college, I'd like to get a job... again, Europe, Canada, or Australia. I think it'll be the least culture shock in contrast to settling down in India, but I don't even know if its feasible.

Anyway, hopefully some of you can lend me a hand. Post here or PM me, whatever you want. Thanks.

From a UK perspective:

I can't imagine getting a student visa as an Indian citizen would be that hard (went to Uni or worked with several people from India...). Perhaps you could check out http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/

In terms of choosing a postgraduate course, you could look at http://www.postgrad.hobsons.com/ to search them. If you were wanting to know the relative reputations of different Universities in the UK, then pm me and I can give you my (probably biased) opinion.

In Norway, the best place to go with a biomedical degree would probably be The University of Science and Technology in Trondheim (used to be called The Norwegian University of Technology and Science, but they decided NUTS wasn't a good acronym). It's an excellent university where my fiancee went to medschool.

Information on Norway:
About 4 million people. Decent climate if you like snow (good summers too). One of the highest GDPs/capita in the world. Virtually free public medical care system. Everybody speaks English to some degree. Everyone in academia speaks English well. Loads and loads of beautiful women. Horrendously expensive beer.

Whatever is in your future Irdalth, I'm sure you will persevere and successfully see your way through it. Even if it is all uncertain until you are right on top of it.

Good Luck, wish I could help you out.

K, so I live in Canada and it's a great place and you won't get much in the way of culture shock, and will in fact be able to watch the exact same TV ;P As for getting here I would use the same path most educated immigrants do to get in. Start by getting a student visa, with it you can even get a student work visa, get a job and basically be a citizen. When your almost done school you can apply for citizenship based on the point system which you will have no problem getting in on as you have work skills and degree.

I roomated with a couple of Saudis who used this exact plan to get citizenship and then brought there family over.

See here for Student Visa Info:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/index.asp

See here for general immigration info:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp

As for province I recommend Alberta, cuz we are generally awesome and the best province with 3 good universities to choose from.
University of Alberta for anything bio/science related:
http://www.ualberta.ca/

University of Calgary for CS or anything eng related:
http://www.ucalgary.ca/

University of Lethbridge for any Liberal Arts/Education or love being a slacker like me (where I'm currently attending):
http://www.uleth.ca/

Hope this helps, Canada is a great place to live and feel free to convo me if you have more questions.

I do, but this is basically how I (and my family) see this: If the DREAM Act doesn't pass by December, its not happening till next fall. And they won't even discuss it till late August. So I'm setting up my plans in case it fails (which I have to assume it will). I plan on having taken my GREs by August, and have been in touch with administration to apply to Universities by September. In October, we're going to be taking voluntary departure either way, lawyer or not, and we'll be leaving by Januaryish/Febuaryish. So this is all me setting up. I'm not gonna be able to make it in India, not without a Masters anyway, and I'm not sure I could take the radical climate/culture shock at this point in my life. And if I'm gonna be moving, why not move somewhere I want to be, right?

Actually, illegal immigrants aren't allowed to serve in the armed services.
