Does that pay well?
Former archaeology major here, until I realized that my career choice was going to align with my interests, but not with eating regularly or keeping the heat on. I like ramen, but not that much.
Now I write software to pay the bills, and have also done microchip design. These are more conducive to actually having a home that has more than one room and consistent electricity. I still study other things — previously photography, right now filmmaking — on the side for sanity purposes. After all, it is important for programmers to stay sane, at least for some loose definition thereof. (Otherwise we build Skynet.)

Now a Field Project Manager for an environmental firm that conducts source emissions testing. I ensure that the industrial boiler or electric generating unit in your backyard doesn't poison you with excessive Dioxin/Furans or acid gases... at least any more than they are allowed to.
