E-UNI Forums, New Style and Support for Mobile Apps

As you have probably all noticed now, the forums are looking a little different, with a new more 'EVE like' forum style, and a lot of small things working a lot better than they used to (such as the redirects back to the page you were looking at when you log in), and things should generally look a bit more professional.

Its all still in a state of flux, and there's a ton of little adjustments still being made to fix the occasional display problem (such as the reply buttons), however we also now have support for a couple of new mobile forum apps, 'Forum Runner' and 'Tapatalk'.

http://www.forumrunner.net/

http://tapatalk.com/

Both support some fairly basic usage stats, but obviously if they don't get used, we may pull support for them.

Please post here if you have any problems with the forum itself, the new style, the above apps, or have any suggestions to improve things, and I'll see what we can do.

Edit: I have also enabled RSS feeds for the forums, so you can use a feed reader to see whats going on - this should (in theory) support authenticated feeds, so you can see what is going on in the non-public forums.

Nice! Been using tapatalk for a while and it mostly worked before. Main problems I remember were quoting and spoilers behaved strangely when trying to read posts. I'll let you know if that's still true.

And hurrah - I've found and fixed the bug which meant that global announcements (like this one) end up linking to the wrong forum, so when following notification links, you could often end up with a "You are not authorised to view this forum" error message.

Now, you should always be directed to the notice board, which of course everyone can see.

Re: E-UNI Forums, New Style and Support for Mobile Apps

I've been wondering one thing for quite some time and since there are changes now, I'd thought I'd bring it up:

Is it possible to see whether or not there are new posts in a given forum, when there are new posts on one of its sub-forums?

The icon seems to be the same if a.) there are no new posts in the forum, but new posts in the subforum or b.) there are new posts in the forum and new posts in the subforum and c.) there are new posts in the forum and no new posts in the subforum. The only case where I see a different icon is when all the threads in the forum and its subforum are read.

For example, when there are no new posts in E-UNI General Discussion, but there are new posts in the Hi and Bye forum, then the icon for E-UNI General Discussion will still be the "unread posts" one.

Am I being thick or is there and way of seeing that information at a glance?

Sidenote: really like the new styles and the little tweaks that make it so much more useable!

Is it possible to have different colour-tags for different skins? I currently use the lighter themes (even though the new EVE'esque theme is nice and all) and the colour-tags bleed horribly. Like light-green on you Kelduum *shudders*.

Yep, the current expanded cargohold icons are sort-of temporary (at least until someone comes up with something more suitable), but I should be able to tweak them a little to take the subforums into account.

Yep, the colour tags will be going soon, or at least be replaced with a smaller set which work with both black and white styles.

Re: E-UNI Forums, New Style and Support for Mobile Apps

Thank you so much for the mobile access. Makes it so much easier to keep track of the forums for me :)

FYI on the RSS feeds, beware that it may allow forum thread titles to be seen by non members. I may be wrong, but some forums operate that way. So something to check on and consider. But in general, the RSS feeds are a great addition so I can keep track of the categories I am really interested in.

Re: E-UNI Forums, New Style and Support for Mobile Apps

PHPBB3s feeds will restrict what is shown based on your user permissions. So if you try and add one of the feeds to an RSS reader that doesn't authenticate using your info it should only show the forums that the default "not logged in" user can access. At least that is what happened when I just tested it with my google desktop gadget.

Re: E-UNI Forums, New Style and Support for Mobile Apps

Correct - the only feeds accessible without authentication are the public forums.

Similarly, if you are logged in and you go to http://blog.eveuniversity.org (which will be the new front page eventually!) you should be able to see the most recent posts that you have access to :)

Re: E-UNI Forums, New Style and Support for Mobile Apps

I've just enabled 'quick posting', as well as added a ton of little style changes, which should improve the general readability of the forums, as well as making things look a little more tidy and EVE-like.

For those of you not using the new style, please post here or send me a PM as to why, so I know what does/doesn't need to be done - most of the issues from before should now be resolved.

Re: E-UNI Forums, New Style and Support for Mobile Apps

And another big pile of changes are completed - theres less overpowering orange (sorry Uber) on the forum and topic lists (with read stuff now greyed out), new graphics for the forums and subforums, and a few more tweaks here and there.

Also, you can simply click on the whole bar for topics and forums, which should save some misclicks for those of you with small screens.

Still to do:
- New "Post/Reply" buttons
- Sort out colour tags for names.
- Style the 'buttons' a little.
- Anything else?

It looks like I have the color blind option enabled now :P Although there was a little too much orange before.
